Normally puppies spend a lot of their time sleeping. Same as for human babies, puppy sleep schedule is very important. Let’s talk about how to set up a proper routine and make sure his sleeping schedule is healthy.
Why Your Puppy Needs Long Sleep?
You might think that the best way to keep your pup healthy is to make him be active all the time. Yes, however, at this stage of his baby’s life good sleep is crucial for his development.
When you see your puppy sleepy is because his little body and brain work twice harder as he keeps developing every day. So, without a proper puppy sleep schedule, he might be at risk for health problems and even disabilities.
Setting Up a Routine
Well, it is expected that newborn puppies sleep the most. Their regular sleep schedule should be around 22 hours and the rest of the time is a nursing time. Again, just because newborn puppies developing so fast and more intense, at this sage they need to sleep a lot.
Older puppies, let say 3 months old, need less sleep but still enough to sustain all that daily activity. 15 hours a day should be a healthy 3 months old puppy sleep schedule. During a long nap, they can recharge their little body and keep going with all that puppy fun stuff later. Encourage your puppy to take a few daytime naps after lunch or intense playing outside.
Same with nighttime sleep. Encourage your puppy to relax at a certain time every day. At first, that might be a challenge but give a few days and he will get used to a routine.
Few more things to help you set up a good sleep schedule:
- Quiet place. Try not to distract your puppy with loud talking or TV noises.
- Create his place to sleep. Set up a cozy and warm bed for your pup.
- Make sure he burns off all the energy before night sleep.
