Instead of enjoying a beautiful spring most of us are in quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a good time to practice social distancing and to just take life a little easier. But how do you isolate yourself if you have a pet, a dog in particular? As they need fresh air and space to be active and be healthy. Can a dog get coronavirus and spread it to humans?
COVID-19 and Pets
The World Health Organization mentioned earlier, “There is no evidence that dogs, cats or any other pets can transmit COVID-19. COVID-19 is mainly spread through droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. To protect yourself, clean your hands frequently and thoroughly”.
It is known that pets can get other types of viruses such as canine respiratory coronavirus, but specifically this novel coronavirus, COVID-19 definitely not.
What about if pets cannot get the virus but can spread it to others? According to China’s National Commission, “while this virus seems to have emerged from an animal source, it is now spreading from person to person”. They also mentioned that there is no cases reported of pets or other animals that can infect or transmit the virus.
What if a dog gets coronavirus on its fur and I touch it? It is proven that COVID-19 survives on a smooth surface like doorknobs or counter tops. Most animals have fur and fur is a porous material that tends to trap the pathogens and making it impossible to contract the virus through touch.
Recommended Safety Measures
It is very important to continue to have a walking schedule for your dog. Staying at home all the time can make them anxious or depressed. Check your local regulations and take your dog for a walk. Make sure you keep the proper distance from other people and wash your hands before and after each walk.
Just keep with the general rule of washing your hands after touching a puppy or a dog and take care of your health.
