Humans are not the only ones who can get sunburned. Your pets’ skin is also sensitive to sun exposure and heat. So as a good pet parent you might want to know a few tricks on how to protect or relieve that sunburn pain.

Any Sunscreen?

Have you ever wondered if dogs actually need sunscreen? Surprisingly for many pet owners, yes, they do! In the opinion of Animal Medical Center in NY “A dog’s skin can be damaged by the sun just like our own, so they require the same protection against the development of sunburn and skin cancer.” And the doctors add that “It’s actually very important to put sunscreen on dogs, especially those with light skin and white fur or hair”.

In case you take your dog for a hike or a long walk at the beach it is recommended to apply sunscreen and reapply it during the peak sun exposure hours (10 am to 4 pm.). You should apply sun protection to their sensitive parts like their nose, lips, ear tips and the belly. Keep your pup in the shade from time to time so it will be much easier to avoid burns and dog heat exhaustion as well.

If you take your dog for a swim then you have to reapply sunscreen right after again. Also, make sure to pick a baby sunscreen which does not contain Zinc oxide (which is toxic for pets). Instead pick the one with no fragrance and Titanium dioxide as a main ingredient and apply tanning products and lotions on your pet.

CBD oil For Sunburns in Pets

Ok, let’s say you didn’t use sunscreen and your doggo got a painful sunburn. How can you help?

If you notice visible redness on your doggos skin and it is very warm, move him to the shade as quickly as possible. Try a cool compresses to soothe the burn and irritation. If you have a CBD topical product apply it to the damaged skin.

CBD is a natural analgesic which can ease the pain and reduce skin inflammation. If the sunburn is mild apply CBD for the next few days to heal and restore the skin faster. However, when you feel like your pet is not well and the burn is severe call your vet to address the problem.

Our pets are like kids, they love to spend time outdoors together with their parents and sometimes need extra protection to keep enjoying sunny days.
